Contributors

We welcome contributions from Cambridge Archivist Group (CAG) members. This page will explain how to contribute blog posts.

Contributors should submit text and images to Lizzy Ennion-Smith (Pembroke College – eae31@cam.ac.uk) and she will upload them to the website, doing the very minimum of editing and adding tags (in order to ensure tags are used consistently). Posters and PDFs should not be submitted as an alternative to text; however, they may be uploaded as a document, in addition to the main text.

Text

We are pleased to receive guest blog posts from archivists and others with relevant interests and experience. The target audience must always be archivists. We accept the following types of post:

  • Advertisements for events. If advertising events through this website, CAG members must be the intended audience. If the event is for the wider public, we recommend that you make a separate website (i.e. a page on your own institution’s website or a dedicated blog/website), although you may still create a blog post on the CAG website to inform archivists and direct them to event information published elsewhere. Recommended length: less than 250 words
  • Reviews of events. These reviews should be written by attendees, not organisers. Ideally they should demonstrate what the CAG does and inform those who couldn’t attend of what they missed. Recommended length: 250-650 words
  • Extended pieces. These could be on new online resources, major projects or ways of working within archives. Recommended length: 650-1000 words

Please submit the text as it is to be uploaded, checked for accuracy and spelling. Lizzy will correct obvious spelling errors etc. but will not rewrite blog posts or fact-check.

We encourage short posts, possibly directing readers elsewhere for more information. We will not post links within the website’s core pages (besides ‘Cambridge Repositories’) but contributors may include links within blog posts, as long as this is done sparingly and to reputable websites.

Occasional items:

  • Obituaries. We do not routinely post obituaries for archivists and unfortunately we are unable to commit to doing so for everybody. We may include occasional posts with links to obituaries on other sites, so if you find such external pieces, please let Lizzy know.

Images

In order for a link to appear on homepage, every blog post must have at least one ‘featured’ image. The ‘featured’ image will appear in full at the top of the blog post but will be cropped for the homepage. This cropping is done automatically and results in losses from the top and bottom of the image. For this reason, we recommend submitting a landscape format image where the most interesting part is in the centre. Additional images can be uploaded.

The same image may appear in more than one blog post but to avoid repetition, they may not both be ‘featured’ images. Once something has been used as a ‘featured’ image, it may only be reused in the body of the blog.

Images should be submitted as jpegs.

Responsibility for clearing copyright on images will be with the contributor. Please ensure that the necessary permissions are in place before submitting images.

If images aren’t provided, blog posts will appear without the link on the homepage, requiring readers to select the ‘Blog’ page or find content by selecting tags.

Advertising new blog posts

Lizzy will send an e-mail to the CAG mailing list about extended pieces. For adverts or reviews, no e-mail will be sent.

Readers may subscribe for notifications about new blog posts. To do this, view the ‘Follow’ options on the right of the screen.
